Unique Logistics Solutions to

Complex Container Drayage Issues

Because a drayage load can mean a few different things, confusion among carriers is common. Many carriers link drayage with going into a port, but that isn't always true. While all drayage loads typically originate from a port of entry, there are often several legs of a drayage journey before a container turns up at its final stop. Legs of a drayage load may include:

Why Are Drayage Companies in Long Beach, CA So Important?

You may be thinking, what's so important about drayage? It's such a small step in the container storage transport process. In reality, it's an integral piece needed in the logistics industry and a crucial part of U.S. supply chain management.

To truly understand the importance of drayage, let's use flowers as an example. Most cut flower shipments enter the market from areas in South America until they end up at Dutch auction houses. Once there, wholesalers purchase flowers in bulk and send those products to retail outlets worldwide. Because flowers are perishable, they typically need to be refrigerated and are often shipped in reefer containers. These refrigerated vessels must maintain a certain temp to prevent loss.

Drayage companies like RelyEx allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services. Drayage companies allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind, because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services.

If port drayage is compromised, it can cause delays and even fines. You know the packages you get delivered to your front door from apps like Amazon? Without drayage and drayage brokers, one or two-day shipping times wouldn't even be possible.

As a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, it seems like drayage shipping issues shouldn't exist. But the fact is inefficiencies and congestion are still major problems at ports. Whether it's a lack of carriers, absent chassis, or overburdened terminals, delays lead to missed deadlines, lost revenue, and worse.

But anytime challenges exist, so too do innovative solutions.

What Clients Say About Us

Paperwork Errors

Typically, shippers need four specific documents to clear shipments through customs: A Bill of Lading (or BOL), a commercial invoice, a packing list, and an arrival notice. Seasoned drayage brokers like RelyEx are used to preparing these documents, but new shippers tend to miss this step due to inexperience.

Payment Delays

If a shipper only pays for part of their shipment, a vessel operator may refuse to release their freight until their bill is fully paid. Payment delays lead to cargo detention at the port of entry, which triggers demurrage charges.

QUOTE REQUEST

Documents Received Too Late

Paperwork is needed when you're shipping goods with a drayage company. When documents like the Certificate of Origin or Bill of Lading arrive at their destination late, you can expect demurrage fees. RelyEx avoids this situation entirely by being proactive when submitting paperwork.

Additional causes for demurrage fees can include:

  • Damaged Container Storage
  • Custom Released Containers
  • Storage Containers Are Too Heavy

LONG BEACH, CA — A 28-year-old man caught on camera kicking and body-slamming a dog in Long Beach last month has been sentenced to three years in state prison, according to prosecutors.

As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, Westminster resident Alexander Cueva pleaded no contest to one count of felony animal cruelty, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office announced Wednesday. His sentence also includes a 10-year ban on possessing any animal.

"This felony conviction and prison sentence send the important message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated in our community,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement Wednesday. “Those who engage in cruelty to animals often engage in the same cruelty to humans. We will champion and protect victims, including the most vulnerable among us, from their abusers and predators.”

Cueva was caught on video abusing his five-month-old German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix, Inara the morning of April 21, according to authorities.

In the graphic video, the man, who prosecutors say is Cueva, walks into the frame with the slack dog hanging over his shoulder. Only after he slams it to the ground does the dog appear alive, offering slight resistance before the man kicks it and continues on, hanging the dog over his shoulder again by the leash as he walks away.

The video quickly went viral amid calls for help identifying the man in the video and saving the animal from further abuse. The animal rights group PETA also launched a $5,000 reward for anyone who had information leading to the suspect's arrest and help saving the dog.

Cueva was taken into custody that same week and charged by the District Attorney's Office with one felony count of cruelty to an animal, along with the special allegation of using a leash as a deadly weapon in the attack.

The dog has since been rescued and is recovering from her injuries, according to officials with Long Beach's Animal Care Services Bureau.

“I want to thank my legal team — particularly Deputy District Attorney and Animal Cruelty Coordinator Kimberly Abourezk and Deputy District Attorney Kelly Fritz — for ensuring this defendant is being held accountable,” Hochman said. “Our office is unwavering in its commitment to protecting the most vulnerable, including defenseless animals.”

Paramedics treated individuals at the scene and transported at least one person to a local hospital for further care.

Car Accidents in California

Vehicle accidents in urban parts of California such as Long Beach are all too common, especially at high-traffic intersections like Alameda St and E 223rd St. These thoroughfares see a steady flow of both commercial and residential vehicles, often increasing the risk for collisions during morning and evening commute hours.

This particular accident, taking place just before 6 a.m., illustrates the vulnerability of drivers during early travel times. Fatigue, reduced visibility, and congestion can all contribute to increased accident risk during these hours. While Long Beach has implemented a variety of measures aimed at improving road safety—such as additional signage, intersection redesigns, and targeted enforcement—more needs to be done to reduce injury collisions.

For those injured in crashes, the path to recovery can be long and complex. Immediate medical attention is crucial, but ongoing care, rehabilitation, and support services often follow. Accessing these resources early can significantly influence recovery outcomes.

If you or someone you know has been hurt in a car crash in Long Beach or elsewhere in California, it’s essential to understand your options. Timely legal and medical guidance can make a substantial difference in protecting your health and rights.

LONG BEACH, CA — They saved the queen, but there is no hope for Long Beach's merry Old English Village.

The historic piece of Long Beach will be destroyed next week to make way for additional parking and event space near the Queen Mary, according to city officials. The city, which took over stewardship of the Queen Mary to save it from sinking, literally and financially, announced the demolition of the adjacent quirky British-theme business center this week.

Long Beach city officials will host a ceremony on April 28 to commemorate the demolition of the remaining Old English Village structures located at Queens Highway and Windsor Way. The demolition is expected to be finished by May.

The area, also known as Mary's Gate Village, was built in the 1970s and served as a themed shopping center with office spaces. It closed in 2019 and has been vacant ever since.

In March, Long Beach's City Council voted to have the village demolished to make way for a space they believe will help in the economic revitalization and growth of the Queen Mary area.

Demolition of the remaining structures will eliminate existing public hazards and address safety concerns, according to city officials, including the presence of mold and a lack of active fire suppression.

When taking helm of the ship and land in 2021, city leaders set out to build up the surrounding area as a destination.

“I am excited about this once in a generation opportunity to set the course for future preservation and development of our City’s icon,” Councilwoman Cindy Allen said at the time. "We know this is a big undertaking, and we are committed to doing right by our community who hold the Queen Mary dear in their hearts.”

With the upcoming demolition, take one last look at what remains of the Old English Village:

LONG BEACH, CA — Ever imagine what it would be like to freely walk the streets of Long Beach without worrying about cars and traffic?

It'll be possible next month when Beach Streets Open Streets takes over two major roads in West Long Beach.

Long Beach's annual Beach Streets festivities will close down a major part of Willow Street and Santa Fe Avenue, allowing people to safely bike, walk and run through several neighborhoods from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Beach Streets is not just about bringing us all together to promote sustainable and healthy living—it's about uplifting our beautiful neighborhoods and celebrating our diverse and vibrant community,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement earlier this year.

This year's event aims to uplift Long Beach's Westside Promise Initiative, a 10-year community investment plan focused on improving West Long Beach, which has been historically underserved.

Find out what's happening in Long Beachfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Vice Mayor and Seventh District Councilmember Roberto Uranga said in a statement that by aligning this year's event with the initiative, "we are not only highlighting our vibrant community—we are building a healthier, safer and stronger West Long Beach.”

Like previous years, entertainment hubs will be located around the route, featuring DJs, face painting, food trucks and a beer garden.

Beach Streets began in 2015 and draws thousands of people each year. It has been hosted in several neighborhoods across Long Beach, including Uptown, Downtown, Cambodia Town and Wrigley.

The purpose of Beach Streets is to support local businesses, bring the community together and encourage zero-emission transportation options.
