Because a drayage load can mean a few different things, confusion among carriers is common. Many carriers link drayage with going into a port, but that isn't always true. While all drayage loads typically originate from a port of entry, there are often several legs of a drayage journey before a container turns up at its final stop. Legs of a drayage load may include:

Why Are Drayage Companies in Las Vegas, NV So Important?

You may be thinking, what's so important about drayage? It's such a small step in the container storage transport process. In reality, it's an integral piece needed in the logistics industry and a crucial part of U.S. supply chain management.

To truly understand the importance of drayage, let's use flowers as an example. Most cut flower shipments enter the market from areas in South America until they end up at Dutch auction houses. Once there, wholesalers purchase flowers in bulk and send those products to retail outlets worldwide. Because flowers are perishable, they typically need to be refrigerated and are often shipped in reefer containers. These refrigerated vessels must maintain a certain temp to prevent loss.

Drayage companies like RelyEx allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services. Drayage companies allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind, because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services.

If port drayage is compromised, it can cause delays and even fines. You know the packages you get delivered to your front door from apps like Amazon? Without drayage and drayage brokers, one or two-day shipping times wouldn't even be possible.

As a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, it seems like drayage shipping issues shouldn't exist. But the fact is inefficiencies and congestion are still major problems at ports. Whether it's a lack of carriers, absent chassis, or overburdened terminals, delays lead to missed deadlines, lost revenue, and worse.

But anytime challenges exist, so too do innovative solutions.

Paperwork Errors

Typically, shippers need four specific documents to clear shipments through customs: A Bill of Lading (or BOL), a commercial invoice, a packing list, and an arrival notice. Seasoned drayage brokers like RelyEx are used to preparing these documents, but new shippers tend to miss this step due to inexperience.

Payment Delays

If a shipper only pays for part of their shipment, a vessel operator may refuse to release their freight until their bill is fully paid. Payment delays lead to cargo detention at the port of entry, which triggers demurrage charges.

Documents Received Too Late

Paperwork is needed when you're shipping goods with a drayage company. When documents like the Certificate of Origin or Bill of Lading arrive at their destination late, you can expect demurrage fees. RelyEx avoids this situation entirely by being proactive when submitting paperwork.

Additional causes for demurrage fees can include:

  • Damaged Container Storage
  • Custom Released Containers
  • Storage Containers Are Too Heavy

Nevada casinos posted a $1.3 billion gaming win in September, marking a 3.3% increase from the same period last year, but volatility in baccarat earnings led to a 1.8% decline on the Las Vegas Strip, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reported Tuesday.

In contrast to the Strip’s decline to $727.7 million, downtown Las Vegas registered a 33% increase, buoyed by record slot machine revenue. Statewide quarterly revenue, however, fell 2.6% from the prior fiscal year, a dip largely attributed to unpredictable baccarat earnings.

The decline is being driven by difficult hold comparison which saw the same quarter of 2023 recorded a hold percentage of 21.5%, which was historically very high, compared to the 11.6% recorded during this quarter which is below average,” Michael Lawton, Senior Economic Analyst at the Nevada Gaming Control Board, explained.

Baccarat, a high-stakes table game sensitive to win rate fluctuations, saw a significant drop in its “hold” rate this quarter. Excluding baccarat, gaming on the Strip rose 3.4% for the quarter, indicating continued growth across other gaming areas.

The quarter’s performance benefited from Las Vegas’ bustling September, driven by high-profile sporting events and entertainment. Allegiant Stadium hosted the Vegas Kick-Off Classic featuring a college football game between Louisiana State and the University of Southern California on Sept. 1, while UFC 306 was the first-ever sporting event held at the Sphere on Sept. 14, to name two highlights of the calendar.

In a milestone for Nevada sportsbooks, the state reported record betting revenue of $80.9 million in September, a 29.8% jump over the previous year. “This represents a new all-time record beating the previous high of $72.0 million set in November of 2021,” Lawton said, attributing the record-breaking revenue to a 10.57% hold rate despite a slight decrease in total wagers.

Across other local markets, the Boulder Strip recorded a 19.3% revenue increase, while Clark County locals casinos rose by 15.9% and Reno by 12.4%. However, South Lake Tahoe saw a decline of 18.8%, with similar losses reported in North Lake Tahoe and Laughlin.

Analyst Joe Greff from J.P. Morgan highlighted a reporting quirk, noting that "because the prior month ended on a weekend, slot win for Saturday, August 31, was reported in September results, overstating September 2024 slot revenue.”

Gaming revenue exceeded $1 billion for 43 consecutive months in Nevada.

On the far north end of Las Vegas Boulevard, there’s a different kind of glimmer that Sin City isn’t as well known for.

More than 334,000 solar panels glisten in the sun at NV Energy’s Dry Lake solar project, harnessing the power of the rays and transmitting it to the power grid for the valley’s 2.3 million residents to use.

The 750-acre solar farm, located on the other side of a natural gas plant, is a part of the utility’s goal of transitioning half of its energy sources to renewables by 2030.

“This picture right here really represents a balanced energy portfolio,” said Doug Cannon, NV Energy president and CEO. “And that’s really what we’re after — making sure that the lights stay on in a way that keeps costs low for our customers.”

The 150-megawatt facility has been operating since the beginning of the year, but it didn’t start generating energy at its full capacity until May. One megawatt is enough power for about 750 to 1,000 homes, according to officials.

Among many desert conservationists in Nevada, the increase of solar has remained a hot-button issue. Many projects, including Dry Lake, encroach on desert tortoise habitat. Some remain worried about large-scale solar construction draining already-limited aquifers across the Silver State.

The Bureau of Land Management, which leased the land to NV Energy for 35 years, released a final version of its Western Solar Plan in September, putting Nevada at the forefront of potential solar development with the most land available for solar applications among any of the 11 states that the agency mapped.

NV Energy’s multibillion-dollar Greenlink transmission line projects will make solar projects across Nevada more feasible, allowing energy generated to travel to denser urban centers.

While private solar companies can sell off the power they generate to other private companies or utilities outside of Nevada, utility-owned projects like Dry Lake are guaranteed to directly benefit their surrounding communities.

In the future, NV Energy hopes to evolve as new technology becomes available, officials said. Renewable energy is high on the priority list.

“The technology is going to change,” said Dani Strain, NV Energy project director. “We’ll have to see.”

Las Vegas locals market, downtown drive Nevada revenue up 3.3% YoY in September

Figures released on Tuesday (29 October) from the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) showed that the state tallied $1.31 billion (£1 billion/€1.21 billion) in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for September, a year-on-year increase of 3.3%. Figures released on Tuesday (29 October) from the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) showed that the state tallied $1.31 billion (£1 billion/€1.21 billion) in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for September, a year-on-year increase of 3.3%. This growth was attributable to the Las Vegas locals market and downtown, not the Strip.

NGCB data showed that downtown Las Vegas tallied $91 million in GGR for September. That represented a 33% increase from last year, the highest jump from any Nevada market. The Las Vegas locals sector brought in $156 million, up 15.8% from a year ago.

For the fiscal year thus far, both markets are up approximately 12% from this point in 2023. Those are the highest marks for any verticals reported by the board.

The combination of the ancillary markets helped soften the fact that the Strip reported its third straight monthly decline. Its total of $727.6 million was a year-on-year drop of 1.8%. Overall, the Strip is down 7.2% from this point last year, the worst of any market. The state overall is 2.6% off from its record-breaking pace from this point a year ago.

Looking closer at the Strip’s report, baccarat continues to be boom or bust for the nation’s gaming capital. The Strip won $88.5 million on the game in September, a 40% decrease year-on-year. To illustrate the volatility of the game, the Strip is down 50% so far in FY24 but is still up 16% for the previous 12 months (1 October 2023-30 September 2024).

Nevada sports betting had strong September

Among the highlights of the report was the strength of the state’s sports betting numbers. Statewide sports betting GGR was $80.8 million, up 30% from a year ago. For FY24 so far, state sportsbooks have generated GGR of $131.6 million, a 25% bump from this point in 2023.

Mobile betting last month accounted for $36 million of the revenue total, also up 25% from September 2023.

The NFL and college football seasons have been good so far for the state. Last month, the first full month of regular season action, saw a total of $55.8 million in football betting revenue, up 49% year-on-year. The entire season so far has brought in $64 million, an increase of 53% from a year ago.

Reno carries northern performance

To the north, Reno’s $71.9 million GGR (+12.4%) carried Washoe County as a whole to a year-on-year gain of 7%. Despite the strong month, the market is still flat compared to this point last year.

Most other major markets in the region, including Sparks (-6%), South Lake Tahoe (-19%), Wendover (-1.4%) and Carson Valley (-6%) posted marked declines. All of those except for Carson (flat) are down for the fiscal year so far.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV safety Jalen Catalon is one of 15 semifinalists for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, which goes annually to the nation's top defensive back.

The list, announced Tuesday by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, includes 15 of the nation's best DBs representing seven conferences and one independent. The semifinalists are selected by a screening committee whose members compile a list of up to 15 players based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character.

Catalon, who transferred this year from the University of Texas and was also a Thorpe semifinalist when he played at Arkansas in 2020, is currently tied for seventh in the nation with four interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown in a win at Houston. He sits seventh in the league with 8.25 tackles per game along with three pass breakups and a key forced fumble. The Texas native has been named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week twice already – Sept. 30 after a win over Fresno State and Oct. 21 following a victory at Oregon State.

Catalon is only the second UNLV player to become a Thorpe semifinalist, following two-time All-American and UNLV Athletics Hall of Famer Jamaal Brimmer in 2003.

The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Committee will reconvene on the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving to select three award finalists. The award finalists will be announced as part of a special presentation by ESPN on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The award recipient is selected from the three finalists by the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award National Selection Committee, which boasts an Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in-house award committee, former Paycom Jim Thorpe Award recipients, members of the NCFAA and sportswriters and college football journalists throughout the country. The winner will be announced Dec. 12 on the Home Depot College Football Awards and honored on Feb. 4, 2025, at the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Banquet in Oklahoma City.

The award was established in 1986 and is named after history's greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back. In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon.

Catalon and the Rebels are off this week before playing at Hawai'i. The next UNLV home game is Nov. 16 vs. San Diego State at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are all on sale by calling (702) 739-FANS or visiting unlvtickets.com.

Nevada gaming win rebounded from two months of declining revenue in September, just as analysts had predicted, but the 2024-25 fiscal year’s first quarter revenue still trailed the previous year, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reported Tuesday.

Analysts say the first-quarter slump is more likely the result of the volatility of baccarat than a declining revenue trend.

Nevada’s 440 licensed casinos produced $1.31 billion in gaming win in September, a 3.3 percent increase from September 2023. But for the first quarter of the fiscal year, the win is off 2.6 percent from the previous year.

That’s because of a tough comparison in baccarat statistics, according to Michael Lawton, senior economic analyst for the Control Board who crunches the state’s monthly gaming statistics.

Lawton said most of the revenue decline is the result of baccarat “hold,” the percentage of money casinos won from players. Lawton recently explained the volatility of baccarat to the Review-Journal.

A jury will now decide life or death for the man accused of killing two tourist leaders at a Vegas hotel.

“The decline is being driven by difficult hold comparisons which saw the same quarter of 2023 record a hold percentage of 21.5 percent, which was historically very high, compared to the 11.6 percent recorded during this quarter which is below average,” Lawton explained Tuesday. “When you remove baccarat from the totals, the Strip is up 3.4 percent or $60.8 million for the quarter and the state is up 3.3 percent or $114.2 million.”

Last month, Lawton predicted the September numbers would be higher because of the timing of the collection win data. That, he said, was why August win was off compared with the previous year.

For the month, Strip win was down 1.8 percent to $727.7 million, but double-digit percentage increases in downtown Las Vegas (33 percent), the Boulder Strip (19.3 percent) and outlying Clark County, which includes Henderson (15.9 percent) carried the state’s performance.

The state’s biggest declines in gaming win came in South and North Lake Tahoe (down 18.8 percent and 14.8 percent, respectively), but Reno casinos provided a 12.4 percent increase.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
