Because a drayage load can mean a few different things, confusion among carriers is common. Many carriers link drayage with going into a port, but that isn't always true. While all drayage loads typically originate from a port of entry, there are often several legs of a drayage journey before a container turns up at its final stop. Legs of a drayage load may include:

Why Are Drayage Companies in Hoboken, NJ So Important?

You may be thinking, what's so important about drayage? It's such a small step in the container storage transport process. In reality, it's an integral piece needed in the logistics industry and a crucial part of U.S. supply chain management.

To truly understand the importance of drayage, let's use flowers as an example. Most cut flower shipments enter the market from areas in South America until they end up at Dutch auction houses. Once there, wholesalers purchase flowers in bulk and send those products to retail outlets worldwide. Because flowers are perishable, they typically need to be refrigerated and are often shipped in reefer containers. These refrigerated vessels must maintain a certain temp to prevent loss.

Drayage companies like RelyEx allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services. Drayage companies allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind, because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services.

If port drayage is compromised, it can cause delays and even fines. You know the packages you get delivered to your front door from apps like Amazon? Without drayage and drayage brokers, one or two-day shipping times wouldn't even be possible.

As a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, it seems like drayage shipping issues shouldn't exist. But the fact is inefficiencies and congestion are still major problems at ports. Whether it's a lack of carriers, absent chassis, or overburdened terminals, delays lead to missed deadlines, lost revenue, and worse.

But anytime challenges exist, so too do innovative solutions.

Paperwork Errors

Typically, shippers need four specific documents to clear shipments through customs: A Bill of Lading (or BOL), a commercial invoice, a packing list, and an arrival notice. Seasoned drayage brokers like RelyEx are used to preparing these documents, but new shippers tend to miss this step due to inexperience.

Payment Delays

If a shipper only pays for part of their shipment, a vessel operator may refuse to release their freight until their bill is fully paid. Payment delays lead to cargo detention at the port of entry, which triggers demurrage charges.

Documents Received Too Late

Paperwork is needed when you're shipping goods with a drayage company. When documents like the Certificate of Origin or Bill of Lading arrive at their destination late, you can expect demurrage fees. RelyEx avoids this situation entirely by being proactive when submitting paperwork.

Additional causes for demurrage fees can include:

  • Damaged Container Storage
  • Custom Released Containers
  • Storage Containers Are Too Heavy

Rumors had been swirling that Brooklyn Dumpling Shop, a small local chain of dumpling fast-casual restaurants, had closed. The shop was closed up, and hadn’t been open, according to passersby. The Hoboken Girl team was finally able to contact the owners on May 7th, who shared the official update: the Brooklyn Dumpling Shop space has closed on Washington Street.

Over four years ago, there was a fire in the restaurant Dili Junction, and since then, the mid-Washington Street fast-casual spot had been closed.

In 2022, Brooklyn Dumpling Shop announced it was coming to the Mile Square, with its first location at 1st Avenue in Manhattan opening officially in spring of 2021. Before it even opened, however, the business announced it was expanding to a second location in Hoboken at 514 Washington Street.

The Hoboken location officially opened February of 2023. This outpost was owned + operated by Jersey City native Charles Tum-Baah, who is “excited to bring Brooklyn Dumpling Shop to Hoboken NJ,” per a press release. “Partnering with a franchise that has a household name like Brooklyn Dumpling Shop carries a prestige + subtle touch that compliments the Hoboken swagger.”

The Brooklyn Dumpling Shops — as a concept — were an automated experience. As a direct effect of COVID-19 and restaurants aiming to offer customers a contact-less free exchange, this company reinvented the concept, according to Charles.

All of the dumplings on the menu came in three per order and were inspired by classic diner dishes, including pastrami, Reuben, Philly cheesesteak, lamb “gyro,” turkey club, cheeseburger, chicken satay, peanut butter and jelly, chicken parm, pizza, and more.

The HBA is partnering with QuietEvents to transform Monroe Center Plaza into a dance floor for the upcoming silent disco.

Wireless headphones will be provided to attendees that stream music from three live DJs. Participants can switch between the DJ channels, which will feature genres like Pop/EDM/Mashups, 80s-2000s Throwbacks, and Hip-Hop/R&B/Latin, offering a personalized musical experience. Each headset has a color LED that shows which channel attendees are listening to, adding a futuristic touch to the Silent Disco while attendees enjoy personal music preferences and a shared experience throughout the night, the HBA announced.

"Silent Disco at the Electric Dandelions is a spring celebration that brings public art and self-expression to Hoboken,” said Roxanne Earley, Executive Director, Hoboken Business Alliance. “It's a celebration of Hoboken's creative spirit, and we invite the community to join us for an unforgettable night of music and dancing under the stars and dandelions! As the HBA continues to foster community through immersive experiences, we look forward to welcoming residents and visitors to this vibrant activation."

Hoboken families, residents, and visitors are invited to join in this free celebration of light and sound. Headphones are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. A deposit is required, payable via credit or debit card. Attendees must present a valid ID to enter, and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Interested attendees are encouraged to RSVP here.

The Electric Dandelions are lit up daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and will be on display at Monroe Center Plaza and Pier A Park until June 6.

This Jersey City Business Has Monthly Sandwich Pop-Ups

Sandwiches can be a work of art, and one Jersey City resident is taking this artistry to a new level. Chris Gennone, perhaps better known as @betweentwoslicesjc on Instagram, has taken sandwich-making by storm with his monthly pop-up sales. The Hoboken Girl had a chance to connect with Chris to learn more about how his love for sandwiches turned into a business venture and what to expect from his culinary creations. Read on to learn more about Chris and the Between Two Slices Monthly Sandwich Club in Jersey City.

The formula of two pieces of bread filled with various meats, cheeses, toppings, and condiments has been developed into hundreds of different creations by many chefs and home cooks alike. Jersey City’s Chris Genoone is putting his spin on the classic lunch food. Chris has been making sandwiches for most of his life.

“There’s this deep nostalgic feeling I get when it comes to making sandwiches. I have a lot of great memories of making them with my grandfather after working in his garden and packing sandwiches with my dad for a long drive. They were bonding experiences for me,” Chris told HG.

Fast forward to 2020, and NJ Monthly hired Chris to write its food blog’s monthly sandwich column. “It was a dream gig – being able to experience so many great delis and shops around NJ and giving these businesses the exposure they deserved,” Chris shared. With so many incredible sandwiches throughout the state, there was no way Chris could fit them all into his column, so he decided to do reviews on his own.

In addition to writing the NJ Monthly column, Chris started taking to social media to review sandwiches from local food establishments. He ran different video series on Instagram surrounding the sandwiches he tasted, and his audience loved the reviews. “I started posting photos of sandwiches I liked or ones that people would send me. And it kind of just escalated from there,” Chris shared. Toward the end of 2022, Chris found himself unhappy in his day job, and with the encouragement of his girlfriend, Sammy, he decided to start doing more of what he loves. “Starting a sandwich pop-up has been on my mind for a long time,” he shared. By January 2023, this dream became a reality.

Chris and Sammy started working on sandwich creations from their home kitchen for close friends, and slowly, the word began to get out. “Sammy and I started doing it out of the tiny kitchen in my apartment just for friends. I’d make the sandwiches, and Sammy would wrap them and give them to the customer. And then we slowly started getting more and more orders and new customers that we didn’t personally know. We started selling out each month, and with the positive feedback, we realized that this could be a legitimate business one day,” Chris shared. Thus, Between Two Slices was born.

The monthly pop-up is different from the average sandwich shop. Developing the menu to be unique and uncharted was very important to Chris, given how much he knew about the great sandwiches New Jerseyians already had access to. “When building our menu, it was really important to me to make sandwiches that were different since there’s an abundance of Italian and Jewish delis in New Jersey,” he explained.

Chris has achieved this goal using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, like the tomatoes in the BLT with roasted tomato aioli. Additionally, he finds inspiration wherever he goes and from others in the business. “As for inspiration, Sammy and I are always chatting about and experimenting with flavors based on dishes we love and trying to adapt them into a sandwich. I get a lot of inspiration from Instagram as well, seeing what other shops are up to,” he shared.

Between Two Slices Sandwich Pop-Up is hosted on the last Saturday of each month, with that month’s menu posted on Instagram the Monday prior. The sandwiches are prepared in a commercial kitchen with pop-up locations for distribution throughout New Jersey. The menu changes each month, and only a limited number of the creations are available.

Previous sandwiches have included “The Goat,” which had roasted butternut squash, grilled endive, fried goat cheese, caramelized onion, and pear jam served on focaccia, and “Sammy’s Sammie,” which boasted hot soppressata, lemon ricotta, arugula, and balsamic fig jam on sourdough focaccia. Customers can pre-order on the Google Form linked on the Between Two Slices Instagram page. The suggested sandwich donation is $15 for most or a little more, depending on the ingredients used that month. The pick-up is located in Jersey City Heights, with the specific address released to customers upon placing an order. Currently, the team is making about 15-30 sandwiches per pop-up.

Between Two Slices currently operates on a pre-order and donation model but has plans to grow soon. “We’re looking forward to doing local farmers’ markets, pop-up events, and collaborations with local businesses,” Chris said. Eventually, the goal is to open a food truck or even have a storefront, but Chris wants to make sure the business scales correctly. “Our goal is to open a food truck or storefront someday, but it’s important to us that we continue to grow organically. I remember reading somewhere that a popular pizza pop-up, Chrissy’s Pizza, said something like, “You create the line.” That really resonated with me, and that’s what we plan to do,” he said.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Cheap Maggie's, a discount clothing store on Hoboken's main street, said it was leaving town almost six months ago, offering items up to 80 percent off starting in November.

As of Monday, it's still in town, and going strong. A worker at the desk on Monday said she was unsure when it would close.

States and cities have enacted laws over the past several years governing "Going Out Of Business Sales," to ensure that the unsightly signs are there for a reason, and the sales are legit.

Earlier this month, Marci Rubin, a spokesperson for the city and for public safety, said, "There have been no complaints against Cheap Maggie's and the City's Zoning Officer continues to monitor the store."

The state of New Jersey has this code about going out of business sales:

Interested in local real estate?Subscribe to Patch's new newsletter to be the first to know about open houses, new listings and more.

"It shall be an unlawful practice for any person to advertise merchandise for sale as a 'going out of business sale' or in terms substantially similar to 'going out of business sale' for a period in excess of 90 days or to advertise more than one such sale in 360 days. The 360-day period shall commence on the first day of such sale. For any person in violation of this act, each day in violation shall constitute an additional, separate and distinct violation."

It wasn't immediately clear if a "Store Closing" sale would apply. The rule is part of the Consumer Fraud Act and enforced by the NJ Attorney General/DCA.

The city has its own rule about "Going-out-of-business-sales" and says it also applies to store closing sales. The rule says the business must get a permit for such sales, and it lasts 30 days. After that, a store can apply only once for an additional 30 days:

It applies to "a sale held out in such a manner as to reasonably cause the public to believe that, upon the disposal of the stock of goods on hand, the business will cease and be discontinued, including but not limited to the following sales: adjuster's, adjustment, alteration, assignee's, bankrupt, benefit of administrator's, benefit of creditors, benefit of trustees, building coming down, closing, creditor's committee, creditor's end, Executor's, final days, forced out, forced-out-of-business, insolvents, last days, lease expires, liquidation, loss-of-lease, mortgage sale, receiver's, trustee's, quitting business."

The laws are here.

Cheap Maggie's, which also has a store in Parsippany, did not respond last week to an email sent to them.

Construction on Hoboken Connect, the most significant, transformative economic redevelopment project along the Hudson Waterfront in generations, will begin this month, according to LCOR, the real estate development firm in charge of the project.

The $176 million project will bring a mixed-use campus development with numerous attributes, including:

Officials said Hoboken Connect is a multiphased initiative that will deliver a mix of private and public components, all of which will be implemented in coordination beginning this year, with both public and private improvements being advanced simultaneously throughout the duration of the development.

When complete, the project is expected to produce a more than $900 million investment in Hoboken’s waterfront, generating both directly and indirectly tens of thousands of permanent and construction jobs, ratables and increased economic spending, driving economic development locally as well as county and statewide.

In addition, the financial commitment to redevelop large portions of Hoboken Terminal from the state of New Jersey and New Jersey Transit, in collaboration with LCOR, will transform the waterfront. The activation of historically significant infrastructure such as the Lackawanna Ferry Terminal Building, Warrington Plaza and Bus Terminal will collectively help to enhance intermodal connectivity, improve the customer experience, generate operational efficiencies and yield overall increases in ridership.

Gov. Phil Murphy said he was thrilled to see the project — on the drawing board for decades — take one step closer to completion.

“We’re thrilled to see Hoboken Connect break ground, proving without a shadow of a doubt that New Jersey — and historic towns like Hoboken — are the place to be,” he said.

He also was happy to see the Aspire program help get it to the starting line.

“When we created New Jersey’s Aspire economic development program, it was with this type of smart planning, big thinking, job-generating project in mind,” he said. “Hoboken Connect is a model for interagency cooperation and smart planning, incorporating sustainability and historic preservation, while generating thousands of good-paying jobs, much-needed housing and new ratables. When coupled with NJ Transit’s planned improvements to Hoboken Terminal, the ease of access will ensure that Hoboken’s waterfront is the crown jewel of the region.”

Brian Barry, a senior vice president at LCOR, said the company is eager for the challenge.

“We’re proud to commence construction on Hoboken Connect, a unique project set to redefine how we approach integrating residential, commercial, transportation infrastructure and public spaces for the strongest community outcomes,” he said. “LCOR is honored to serve as a catalyst for innovation and sustainable development in Hoboken.

“Throughout this initiative, our primary focus will remain on fostering economic growth, enhancing the overall commuter experience, expanding job opportunities and enhancing lifestyles to meet the unique needs of the Hoboken community and NJ Transit commuters.”

The development will feature a Class A, 27-story, mixed-use building featuring 386 residential units, of which 20% will be affordable. Encompassing roughly 365,000 square feet, the residential portion will also include dedicated space for ground-floor retail. The wide range of amenities include a first-floor lobby and resident lounge with package room, concierge and pet spa, as well as a second floor and rooftop amenity space that includes a fitness center, entertainment kitchen, coworking spaces, dining areas and pool.

The 21-story, 704,355-square-foot Class A office building will offer expansive unobstructed New York City views from the George Washington Bridge to the World Trade Center on highly efficient floor plates ranging in size from 30,000 to 40,000 square feet, with an additional 4,330 square feet dedicated to ground-floor retail space.

Amenities will include a conference facility, tenant lounge and open green spaces, open work areas, food and beverage options, outdoor loggias, interior and exterior rooftop space with irreplaceable 360-degree views of the Hudson Waterfront and New Jersey, and a state-of-the-art bike room with locker room and shower facilities.

Hoboken Connect will represent a forward thinking, world-class transit-oriented development that will incorporate a slew of sustainable design features, LEED Gold and Silver office and residential buildings, green roofs and extensive stormwater improvements, and a geothermal system at the residential building, the first of its kind in New Jersey.

NJTransit CEO Kevin Corbett is thrilled.

“We are excited that Hoboken Connect, one of the most transformational projects in our capital program, is officially underway,” he said. “This project will not only restore the historic Hoboken Terminal into one of the crown jewels of our rail system, but it will greatly enhance the surrounding area, as well.”

“We are grateful for Gov. Murphy’s historic investment of $176 million in the Hoboken Connect project, which sets a new bar for Transit-Oriented Development. We look forward to working alongside LCOR as we continue to deliver the best possible experience for our customers.”

Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla said the city can’t wait to watch the project develop.

“After decades of this project stalling, I’m incredibly proud that my administration has been able to work around the clock with the state, LCOR and project stakeholders to finally turn it into a reality,” he said. “This redevelopment initiative will completely transform Hoboken Terminal into a world-class transit terminal, along with new affordable housing, new retail space, biking and pedestrian safety upgrades, and will substantially boost our local economy. The construction on the first phase of the project is a long time coming, and I look forward to the eventual completion of the project.”
