Because a drayage load can mean a few different things, confusion among carriers is common. Many carriers link drayage with going into a port, but that isn't always true. While all drayage loads typically originate from a port of entry, there are often several legs of a drayage journey before a container turns up at its final stop. Legs of a drayage load may include:

Why Are Drayage Companies in Richmond, VA So Important?

You may be thinking, what's so important about drayage? It's such a small step in the container storage transport process. In reality, it's an integral piece needed in the logistics industry and a crucial part of U.S. supply chain management.

To truly understand the importance of drayage, let's use flowers as an example. Most cut flower shipments enter the market from areas in South America until they end up at Dutch auction houses. Once there, wholesalers purchase flowers in bulk and send those products to retail outlets worldwide. Because flowers are perishable, they typically need to be refrigerated and are often shipped in reefer containers. These refrigerated vessels must maintain a certain temp to prevent loss.

Drayage companies like RelyEx allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services. Drayage companies allow flower shippers to send their products from Argentinian ports to airports in the Netherlands with peace of mind, because their products are protected. The only way to accomplish this feat is with the help of swift, meticulous port drayage services.

If port drayage is compromised, it can cause delays and even fines. You know the packages you get delivered to your front door from apps like Amazon? Without drayage and drayage brokers, one or two-day shipping times wouldn't even be possible.

As a multi-billion-dollar industry in the U.S. alone, it seems like drayage shipping issues shouldn't exist. But the fact is inefficiencies and congestion are still major problems at ports. Whether it's a lack of carriers, absent chassis, or overburdened terminals, delays lead to missed deadlines, lost revenue, and worse.

But anytime challenges exist, so too do innovative solutions.

Paperwork Errors

Typically, shippers need four specific documents to clear shipments through customs: A Bill of Lading (or BOL), a commercial invoice, a packing list, and an arrival notice. Seasoned drayage brokers like RelyEx are used to preparing these documents, but new shippers tend to miss this step due to inexperience.

Payment Delays

If a shipper only pays for part of their shipment, a vessel operator may refuse to release their freight until their bill is fully paid. Payment delays lead to cargo detention at the port of entry, which triggers demurrage charges.

Documents Received Too Late

Paperwork is needed when you're shipping goods with a drayage company. When documents like the Certificate of Origin or Bill of Lading arrive at their destination late, you can expect demurrage fees. RelyEx avoids this situation entirely by being proactive when submitting paperwork.

Additional causes for demurrage fees can include:

  • Damaged Container Storage
  • Custom Released Containers
  • Storage Containers Are Too Heavy

Many Veterans find staying active a rewarding and challenging part of their treatment. When you add-in competition, comradery, and entertaining activities, you have a recipe for successful rehabilitation and a good time.

Adaptive sports recreation therapists at the Richmond VA Medical Center hosted the 2nd Annual Richmond Tournament of Champions here September 25-27, 2023. Veterans competing in the games tested their skills at 9-ball billiards, cycling, air rifle marksmanship, bocce ball, disc golf, and bowling.Richmond VA recreation therapists, Jennifer Vass, Nicole Shuman, and other rec therapy team members organized the multi-day event. The idea originated when many of the games VA patients were accustomed to attending were cancelled during the COVID pandemic.“We have a group of Veterans who love to travel to national Veterans' events,” Vass said. “During COVID, that stopped.”The logistics of getting Veterans and staff to these events during this period became much more complex and, in many cases, ceased altogether.Veteran athletes who were unable to travel for their beloved games became disheartened.Having gained ample experience working and attending many VA national games, Vass and Shuman decided to take matters into their own hands by organizing an event on their home turf.“It’s exciting to be able to have this here, and it’s good practice for our Veterans who are going to the big games,” Shuman said. She also stated that these games provide an opportunity to those Veterans who are not able to travel to compete, as well as introducing new patients and many of the facility’s inpatients to enjoy the experience. With just three months of preparation, the therapists were set to kick off the three-day tournament with 28 competitors and six separate events. One of the main goals of these games is to help those Veterans who are recovering from injury to regain independence and quality of life. Vass and Shuman both remarked that one such person who participated in the games is competitive recumbent racer, Mike Brooks. Brooks was injured in a cycling accident and did physical rehabilitation at the Richmond VA hospital.“I think it was four or five years ago that we gave him his first trike through the equipment program,” Shuman said. “He put 8,000 miles on it.”Through hard work, treatment and physical therapy, Brooks was able to return to a sport that he loves.“Being part of helping someone get that ability back is extremely exciting and rewarding,” Shuman added. This year’s event concluded with a fellowship dinner and awards ceremony for participants and their families. The ceremony included special guest speakers and awards for the top three competitors in each sport.Matthew Reed competed in five of the six events and took home the coveted Triple Threat Championship crown for being the top competitor in three events.“I’m legally blind,” Reed said. “Through Nicole’s [Shuman] assistance, and the whole team’s assistance, it truly became an adaptive experience for me.”Reed appreciated the opportunity to be able to compete with his friends at the VA.“The team here is just fantastic,” he said. “It’s so much fun to be part of this adaptive sports program.”Vass, Shuman, and the rest of their team already have their sights set on next year's games. Their goal is to expand the Tournament of Champions with more participants, more fellowship, and more fun.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Dream weddings are being turned into nightmares after a company that leases venues across the country just filed for bankruptcy.

One of those sites is in Powhatan County. Local couples are reaching out to the On Your Side Investigators because they said they can’t get answers or their money back.

Many soon-to-be brides and grooms planned to marry at a beautiful estate in Powhatan County. However, the Florida-based company leasing that property filed for bankruptcy, leaving people scrambling for a new location and a refund.

“It’s just devastating to all brides in Richmond,” Cindy Paxton said.

Paxton looked forward to watching her daughter Emily walk down the aisle at the Farm’s Lakeside Pool Estate in Powhatan.

She booked the venue nearly 10 months ago and paid more than $12,000 upfront. Fast-forward to three weeks, and she got an email from the property’s managers, The Farm LLC, notifying her of their Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in Florida.

“I’m angry because I felt very swindled that the pressure was to pay the money up-front and then were not getting any services at all,” Paxton said.

Kelsey Lee and her fiancé Jim Givens booked the same venue in August 2022 and said The Farm LLC double booked her weekend.

“When we had reached out, they couldn’t give us confirmation that those dates were ours,” Givens said. “We asked them several times that those dates are still ours. Can you send us a contract? If not, we want our money back.”

Lee said they had difficulty contacting the company, but when they did, they eventually got a refund.

“They have several LLCs, and it looks like they are paying money out to each other but aren’t able to pay back these couples who are being canceled,” Lee said.

Families across the country are also affected. The Farm LLC leases venues in multiple states.

“It’s a standard lease where they have full access to hold events. When they filed the Chapter 11 bankruptcy, though, it gave them the automatic stay, meaning we have to go through the court system, which is what we are doing at this time,” Ashley Welch said.

Welch purchased Lakeside in 2017 and leased it to The Farm LLC in November 2022 to hold events. She says her hands are tied, while The Farm LLC uses her property to operate their own business.

“Because they did stop paying us as well, so not only are they using our property, but you know payment has been an issue,” Welch said. “Therefore, that’s the concern with them continuing to take money from couples is not being able to uphold those weddings.”

The President of The Farm LLC, Jacob Martin, told 12 On Your Side he’s wired half of what they owe to Welch as part of their leasing agreement.

Meanwhile, Martin said the bankruptcy affects fewer than 200 customers and that they’re doing their best to work with all of them.

He also released this statement:

“In January 2024, we entered Chapter 11 Reorganization to stabilize our family’s business. This Reorganization affected less than 200 of our guests.

We have notified affected guests and proposed alternate accommodations or refund options to them.

If you feel you are affected by this issue and you have not heard from us, please email us at 11team@thefarmllc.com so that we can help.”

As we reported a few weeks ago, Pharrell and director Michel Gondry are coming to Richmond and now we have more information to share.

As reported by The Virginian-Pilot, the production of a movie musical based on the childhood of Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams is set to make a significant economic impact on Virginia. With a total estimated statewide economic benefit of about $84 million, the film is positioned to be a major project in Richmond and Hampton Roads. The Virginia Film Office has detailed plans for the production which is expected to receive over $12 million in state incentives.

The movie, which portrays Williams’ upbringing in the Atlantis apartment complex, has chosen Richmond as its primary filming location. Additional photography will take place in Virginia Beach. This choice reinforces the state’s appeal as a filming destination, bolstered by an incentive agreement that provides up to $9 million in grants and an additional $3.35 million for a promotional advertising campaign.

The shooting schedule is concentrated between May 15 and August 7. During this period, the production will utilize approximately 500 crew members, 25 actors, and 2,700 extras, marking it as one of the largest filming projects in the state this year.

This project not only highlights Pharrell’s dedication to his roots but also positions Virginia as a competitive locale against major film production states like Georgia, which had offered the project around $15 million in incentives. The production is anticipated to spend more than $42 million within Virginia, underpinning significant economic contributions and showcasing the state’s capacity to host large-scale productions.
